Steel for the aerospace industry

Accelerating from almost 600 tonnes to 260 kilometres per hour in just a few seconds means extreme material loads and temperatures as well as enormous pressure. We have the perfect solution for such loads, using our special steel and highly innovative materials. We always offer our customers uncompromisingly high quality and absolute reliability.

Set new standards

Swiss Steel Group is characterised as a leading supplier to the aerospace industry. With state-of-the-art production facilities, a diverse product range and extensive factory and product approvals, we are ideally positioned to meet the constantly growing demands of this innovative industry.

With over 50 years of experience in the production of steels for the aerospace industry, we are continuously expanding our range of stainless and engineering steels. Especially for components that are exposed to extreme loads such as fatigue or cyclic stress, maximum purity is crucial. For such cases, our remelting systems offer the option of remelting the steel. This not only improves the purity of the material, but also significantly increases the homogeneity of the steel and minimises segregation.

Purity and remelting process

Thanks to its extensive production facilities, Swiss Steel Group is able to supply the entire portfolio of steel grades and speciality materials for the aerospace industry.

This applies to both stainless steels and engineering steels. When steels are specified for the most demanding requirements in the aerospace industry, it is often necessary for the purity of the steels to fulfil the highest requirements. This is particularly the case when the components are exposed to fatigue or cyclic loading during operation. In such cases, the steel can be remelted in our remelting plants.

The remelting process is required to remove non-metallic inclusions from the steel and can be carried out under normal atmospheric conditions, under inert gas or even in a vacuum, using vacuum arc remelting equipment.

In addition to improving the purity of the steel, the remelting process also leads to a significantly higher homogeneity of the steel and helps to minimise segregation.

Product quality

The aerospace industry has strict quality requirements to ensure the best possible product quality and reproducibility. These require comprehensive monitoring of suppliers. For example, customers in the aerospace sector require certification in accordance with AS 9100, AS 9120 and NADCAP. Swiss Steel Group can provide evidence of the following certifications:

  • ISO 9001 (quality management system)
  • ISO 14001 (environmental management system)
  • ISO 50001 (energy management system)
  • AS 9100 (aerospace manufacturer)
  • AS 9120 (aerospace stockholder)
  • NADCAP (heat treatment)
  • ISO 17025 (testing laboratory)

Deliveries to the aviation industry often require additional individual customer approvals. Swiss Steel Group is approved by various original equipment manufacturers and suppliers.

Firmly anchored in the rock - Swiss Steel Group’s Top12 anchors secure a new section of road high above Lake Lucerne

100 years – that is the lifetime expected for the new section of the K2b cantonal highway between Vitznau and Gersau following its renovation and modernization. This is made possible in no small part by the Top12 special stainless steel from the Swiss Steel Group, from which the anchors for the retaining wall structure and support elements are manufactured. Over a hundred of these were drilled several meters deep into the steep rock face. They secure the walls and beams that support the new, 350-meter-long section of road. The structure is spectacular not only from a geotechnical perspective but also for everyone who drives over it and enjoys a breathtaking view of Lake Lucerne below.
